I will never forget seeing Puff Daddy and The Family back in the day. My way-too-cool-for-school dad had once again scored tickets to a concert that other parents would question his taste in, but my friends and I didn’t care. We were just psyched to escape to the city on a school night and not see just one of our current hip-hop heroes, but twelve.
Diddy did it big back in the day. I mean, Mase, Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Nas, Usher, 112, Lil Kim, The Lox and Puffy? All on one tour and each armed with an album full of club bangers to school our junior high minds. It was epic.
Since then Diddy has been more of a personality than a performer, however I think his new video above signals he could be bringing a good album to the table. First off, putting Biggie verses postmortem to open the track makes sure you don’t mistake this for another “Last Night”. I watched Making His Band too and the dude took vocal lessons. He also amassed a band that can jam and play the songs off the album live a la Jay-Z to make sure you know he is a real hip-hop artist, not just a studio producer.
We shall see, Last Train to Paris, his fifth studio album comes out November 24th.
